Answers to the Most Important Questions
How long does a language level last?
Our intensive courses consist of 160 instructional units per level over 8 weeks, or 20 instructional units per week. How long it takes you personally to advance to the next level depends on your prior knowledge and how much effort you put into your studies. For evening and part-time courses, the duration is determined by the respective course schedule.
What does UE stand for?
UE stands for "teaching unit." You can find the exact length of a teaching unit and the class times in the description of each course.
Can I participate online?
Yes. Our online courses are held live, with direct communication with the instructor, digital whiteboards, interactive exercises, and group work. You also have access to the learning platform online.
Are there evening classes?
We offer evening, part-time, and concurrent enrollment options. You can see which courses are currently available for registration and when they start in the Course Finder.
Where are the in-person classes held?
We offer in-person classes in Düsseldorf, Essen, and Bochum. You can find the current availability for each location in the „Locations & Availability“ section.
What happens if a class is full?
The number of participants is limited. If a course is full, you can use the Course Finder to search for the next start date, another location, or an online format. If a waiting list is available for a course, this will be noted directly on the course page. If you have any questions, our language course advisors are here to help.
Will I have access to the learning platform?
Yes. All participants in our courses—both in-person and online—receive access to StartDE's digital learning environment.
Can I see my progress?
Yes. On the platform, you can see which lessons you've completed and keep track of your quiz and test scores.
Is there homework and are there tests?
Yes. You can complete your homework digitally, and quizzes and tests help you assess your progress. Submissions are reviewed and graded.
Does StartDE offer FSP courses for doctors?
Yes. Our FSP preparation course uses real-world cases, conversation scenarios, and mock exams. You can find the current dates in the Course Finder under „FSP / Medicine.“ We cannot guarantee success on the exam.
How do I register for a course?
Select your course in the Course Finder and click „Select Course.“ You’ll be taken to the course page, where you can complete your registration and receive your account for the learning platform.
